Criteria for Determining Grant Aid Eligibility

To be eligible for TRIO/STAARS grant aid, students must meet the following criteria:

  • has applied for Financial Aid

  • has received a Federal Grant offer letter.

  • has an unmet financial need as documented in the offer letter

  • needs support services in order to meet academic goals

Students who meet these standards may qualify for a grant for a maximum of their first four semesters if they fulfill the following requirements:

Level A Students

During their first semester with the TRIO program , students must:

  1. Attend Intake Session with TRIO Director.

  2. Meet with the TRIO/STAARS counselor at least twice.

    1. During the first meeting, the counselor will review your academic goals and help you work out a timeline to reach them. This is called an Educational Plan (SEP). You must complete an Educational Plan before the fourth week of the semester.

    2. The TRIO/STAARS counselor will meet with you a second time. At this meeting, he will evaluate your academic needs and suggest an individual plan for academic support, including matching you with services that will help you remain successful in your classes (for example, mentors/tutors in areas where you need help).

  3. Complete the assigned academic support activities (contacting the mentor, tutoring, workshops, conferences with instructors, TRIO lab courses). Student requirements will differ based on their academic need, but all students will be assigned 6-20 hours of required work.

  4. Complete an end-of-semester progress report (progress will be reevaluated by the TRIO/STAARS counselor during the semester). Based on this evaluation, you will be provided with additional services to support your academic success in later semesters.

  5. Must be in good academic standing (2.0). or must complete additional tutoring hours recommended in updated Educational Plan.

  6. Must complete program evaluation
Level B Students (Must have at least 12 credits)
  1. must meet with the TRIO/STAARS advisor twice per semester.

  2. must have an updated Educational Plan filed for the current semester.

  3. must complete assigned academic support (workshops, mentoring, and/or tutoring sessions) offered in the Learning Center in Mathematics, Computer Literacy, English; Reading/Writing, or Study Skills.

  4. must complete the Career Exploration Module/ EUREKA by:

    1. choosing and searching a major and University that interests you

    2. identifying the relevant articulation agreement between Skyline College and the selected University and department/major and

    3. writing a two-page, double-spaced Personal Statement.

  5. must complete the Multiple Intelligence Assessment Survey. (See Counselor)

  6. must complete the mid-semester progress report.

  7. must be in good academic standing ( 2. 0). or must complete tutoring hours recommended in updated Educational Plan.

  8. Must complete program evaluation
Level C Students (Must have at least 24 credits and have completed Eureka)
  1. must have an updated Educational Plan filed

  2. must complete any four Learning Center Workshops and/or tutoring sessions.

  3. must research and apply for one scholarship

  4. must complete a Personal Statement based on his/her experience as a grant recipient during the previous semester.

  5. must complete the mid-semester progress report.

  6. must be in good academic standing ( 2. 0). or must complete tutoring hours recommended in updated Educational Plan.

  7. Must complete program evaluation
Level D Students (Must have at least 36 credits and have completed Eureka)
  1. must write a Personal Statement suitable for application to transfer to a four-year university.

  2. must complete at least six hours tutoring and/or mentoring other TRIO students in his or her areas of strength or complete some other approved means of college service.

  3. must complete the mid-semester progress report.

  4. must have an updated Educational Plan filed.

  5. must complete visits to two transfer colleges or universities.

  6. must attend at least two hours of TLC services: workshops, etc.

  7. must be in good academic standing ( 2. 0). or must complete tutoring hours recommended in updated Educational Plan.

  8. Must complete program evaluation.

NOTE: Students are eligible for only four semesters of grant aid; exceptions must be approved by TRIO Director (see Approval form ).
