Goals of the TRIO/STAARS Mentoring Program

Research suggests that students tend to be more successful in college when they have personal contact with one or more professionals who work there—someone who can help them to interpret the expectations and customs of the college culture. Based on this principle, the TRIO/STAARS Mentoring program has the following goals:

  1. to provide students with access to information that will help them to reach their academic goals.

  2. to support students' efforts to understand the academic and social expectations that apply at Skyline College .

  3. to assist students in their efforts to communicate clearly and effectively with others in the academic community.

  4. to respect students' diverse racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds and to assist them in becoming enfranchised members of the academic community while remaining part of their other communities.

  5. to promote student self-esteem while encouraging them to evaluate their achievements realistically.

  6. to provide guidance for students in developing effective relationships with other professionals at Skyline College .

  7. to provide an accessible point of contact for student questions.

  8. to promote student independence by showing students how to access resources for instruction, support, and information.

  9. to convey to students a sense of acceptance, welcome, and belonging.

  10. to applaud students' achievements and encourage their success.

  11. to advocate directly for students when appropriate.

  12. to act as liaison with TRIO program staff in communicating student needs for additional support.
