What Happens in Your Intake Session?

Your Intake Session will be scheduled after you receive the first letter from the TRIO Program verifying your eligibility for the program. You will be asked to make an appointment with Susan Andrien, TRIO Director, for an Intake Session. The session will take about 45 minutes.

  • During this time, the TRIO Director (or, in some cases, a staff member) will explain the TRIO program to you and will assess your academic need using the Academic Need Assessment Form. (The Department of Education defines academic need as the need for some of the academic services offered by the program in order to meet your academic goals).

  • After you talk with us about your academic strengths and weaknesses, you will be given a TRIO Folder identifying the kinds of support that best fit your needs.

  • You will also be asked to sign a STAARS Student Contract explaining your responsibilities and rights as a STAARS student.

  • You will be introduced to Ira Lau (day) or Abdullah Yahya (evening), who will assist you in logging onto the TRIO website, and answer your questions about computer use in the Learning Center and in college classes.

  • Finally, you will be assigned a TRIO/STAARS Mentor to assist you in meeting your goals throughout the year.
