TRIO / STAARS Benefits to Students
  • On-site STAARS counselor, Guillermo Villanueva, for academic, personal, transfer, financial aid, or crisis counseling. Guillermo gives personal attention to STAARS students' educational plans (SEPs) and assists with revising them as needed.
  • STAARS Math Instructor, John Chavez, who will provide an individual assessment of your math needs and will design a program specifically for your needs through the course MATH 650/STAARS.
  • STAARS English Instructor, Rachel Bell, who will provide an individual assessment of your English and Reading abilities and will design a program specifically for your needs through the course English 650/STAARS.
  • STAARS Tutorial Coordinator, Felix Perez, who will assist you in finding tutors for any courses in which you may need assistance, and who teaches courses and workshops in Study Skills for TRIO students.
  • STAARS Reading Aide Chuck Leach , who will provide you with support in reading and writing in all of your classes, and who teaches workshops in Reading Skills. Chuck is also offering ESOL workshops for STAARS students.
  • STAARS Writing Aide Larry Coons, who will provide you with professional assistance in writing for your English classes and all of your other classes. Larry also offers ESOL Conversation groups.
  • STAARS Daytime Computer Aide Ira Lau, who will orient you to the TRIO website and will support you in learning all the technology skills you will need in your college courses. Ira also teaches workshops on computer skills for STAARS students.
  • STAARS Evening Computer Aide Abdullah Yahya, who will orient you to the TRIO website and will support you in learning all the technology skills you will need in your college courses. Abdullah also provides individual instruction in website design for STAARS students.
  • Tutoring in all subjects: professional graduate tutors and student tutors are available from Monday through Thursday from 8 AM – 10 PM. STAARS students have the privilege of:
    • making regular or one-time appointments with TLC tutors
    • meeting with tutors unlimited times each week
    • meeting with tutors for extended periods of time (up to one hour)
    • having a specific tutor assigned
  • Grant aid to supplement financial aid : available to STAARS students who meet specific requirements (see Grant Aid Requirements).
  • Assistance with transfer: visits to transfer campuses, assistance with applications, individual assistance with writing required personal statements.
  • Individual professional mentoring: Based on individual goals and needs, a staff member is assigned to each STAARS student. The mentor provides support in many ways: advising you about academic problems or decisions, being your advocate, and assisting you in communicating with faculty and staff.
