Skyline College 's STAARS program is funded through the US Department of Education as one of the TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) projects that exist throughout the nation. TRIO/SSS is a federally funded student support program designed to help first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities who plan to transfer to a 4-year college or university. In order to help our students achieve their goals as quickly as possible, the TRIO/STAARS Program provides students with a variety of services designed to create an academically focused environment. We provide special courses focused on individual students' needs, personalized academic counseling, tutorial services, academic mentors, priority registration, assistance with the transfer process, visits to transfer campuses, and, for some students, grant aid to supplement their financial aid package.
The name STAARS has several meanings. The letters stand for Student Transfer, Academic Achievement, and Retention Services. This term describes our Program's mission: to help students stay in school, achieve good grades, and transfer to a four-year college with excellent chances of success. The name STAARS also stands for the way we see our students, as the brightest and most important people on campus. Finally, we hope that through the help they receive in this program, our students can achieve their dreams—and reach for the stars. |
